Detailed 10 days in Sri Lanka itinerary
The following would be an ideal Sri Lanka itinerary 10 days for tourists visiting the country for the first time.
Day 1 – Galle
Once you arrive at the Bandaranaike International Airport (Katunayake) or the Mattala Rajapakse International Airport (Hambantota), you can head to the southern town of Galle as your first stop in Sri Lanka. In Galle, visit the well preserved Dutch Fort, take a dip in the cooling waters of the Indian Ocean, visit the turtle hatchery, and walk around the British style colony and enjoy a meal at one of the many local restaurants in Galle. There are also a few historic churches that you can visit in the town, along with the Galle lighthouse, the harbor, and the National Maritime Museum.
Day 2 – Yala
Visit the Yala National Park here and opt for a camping experience amidst the wildlife. There are several luxury camping service providers that you can get in touch with and book a night at their camping tents. This way you can gain an up-close-and-personal experience with the unique wildlife in Sri Lanka. Also go for a game drive the next morning where you will ride on an open air jeep into the jungle to spot Leopards, sloth bears, elephants and more of those wild animals.
Day 3 & 4 – Arugam Bay or Passikuda
Often known as the best surf spot in the country, Arugam Bay is the place to be if you are a beach/surf lover. This tiny, unexplored place on the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka has a population of a few hundred and all the essentials are lined up on a single stretch of land that is parallel to the ocean.
Passikudah is about 150kms North of Arugam Bay, along the same eastern coastline. This Bay is a more developed one on the eastern stretch with a collection of beautiful luxury resorts now available for accommodation for those who want to spend some time on the calm and shallow waters of Passikuda.

Day 5 & 6 – Kandy
Kandy is the cultural capital of the island and is situated in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. In Kandy, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is where Lord Buddha’s Tooth is preserved. Every year, in July/August, a vibrant procession known as the Esala Perahera takes place to parade the Tooth Relic around the city of Kandy. Tourists often time their visits around this period to catch a glimpse of this marvelous procession.
