Day 1 – Negombo
Since Negombo is the closest city from the Bandaranaike International Airport in Sri Lanka, it would be a good idea to make that your first stop on your Sri Lanka beach itinerary. This is an ideal beach town for sun and sea lovers with amazing views of the sunset. You can enjoy water sports here, stroll along the shore, meet with friendly townspeople, look around at shops selling garments, semi-precious stones and souvenirs.
Day 2 & 3 – Kalpitiya
Next morning, head further up along the western coastline to the beautiful bay of Kalpitiya. Here you can enjoy a dolphin watching experience and take lessons in kitesurfing. If you are serious about learning to kitesurf, you will need to schedule a few more days in Kalpitiya to master the art on the perfect waters of the Indian Ocean.
Day 4 – Nilaveli
The drive to Nilaveli from Kaplitiya is about 4.5-5 hours but is definitely a worthy beach destination in Sri Lanka. A splendid sight of turquoise waters lapping over the soft sands of the eastern coastline of the island. An ideal place to build sandcastles with children or you could even make a small trip to the neighboring Pigeon Island to have a look at the beautiful coral reefs.
Day 5 – Passikuda
From Nilaveli, your next Sri Lanka beach itinerary location should be further down on the east coast to the bay of Passikuda. The waters here are extremely safe, hence ideal for sea bathing. You can safely swim as far as 200m from the shoreline. This area is secured by a reef and therefore is much calmer in terms of waves. Water sports such as jet skiing and banana boat rides are popular on this beach.
Day 6 & 7 – Arugam Bay
A little further south of Passikuda is Arugam Bay, the most attractive spot for surfers from around the world. The peak surfing period is from April to October and many foreigners put up here for days during this season to enjoy a great surfing experience.
Day 8 – Yala
Yala is more towards the southern coast and along with its beautiful beaches, it is also popular for wildlife and camping experiences at the Yala National Park.
Day 9 – Mirissa
Your next beach destination in Sri Lanka would be Mirissa, where you can enjoy a thrilling whale watching experience. The small beach stretch here is surrounded by bars, restaurants, a lot of foreigners and is a flawlessly clean beach to be on.
Day 10 – Unawatuna
Unawatuna is a small town close to Galle which is popular amongst locals and tourists for its clean and safe beach for a dip in the Ocean. Apart from that, you can find several budget hotels, water sporting activities, restaurants, kiosks selling a variety of goodies, and a turtle watching spot on the sea shore.
Day 11 – Galle
Spend a relaxing day sun bathing on a private beach spot in Galle. Close to the light house, you can find a peaceful spot to relax. Apart from that, visit the Dutch Fort to see remnants of the Portuguese rule and the new Fort Bazaar for some delicious food options.
Day 12 – Hikkaduwa / Bentota
Hikkaduwa and/or Bentota are a must visit on your Sri Lanka beach itinerary for a picture perfect scenery of sun, sand, water and a lot of beach fun. Snorkeling on the reefs of Hikkaduwa, scuba diving, sea-boat rides, water skiing, wind surfing, banana rides, tube ride, jet ski, deep sea fishing, and much more is possible at specialized water sports centers in this part of the country.
Day 13 & 14 – Colombo
Galle Face Green is the best beach to visit in Colombo for an exclusive view of the sunset with enjoyable winds blowing into your face. Kite flying, football, volleyball and a peaceful jog along the ocean are popular activities at the Galle Face Green.
