Jaffna Itinerary – a unique holiday experience

 

Jaffna, an ancient port city, is also known as the hometown of Tamil population in Sri Lanka. This densely populated peninsula is more like an island except for a narrow stretch of land known as the Elephant Pass, which connects Jaffna to the rest of Sri Lanka and should probably be included in your Sri Lanka Jaffna itinerary. Apart from that, some of the best places to visit in Jaffna are the fort, public library, market, archaeological museum, clock tower, old Dutch building and several places of worship. When preparing your Sri Lanka itinerary, make sure to have Jaffna on the list as there is a lot to see and explore in this remote war-torn town.

Getting to Jaffna is now hassle free and does not involve any security checks or clearance. It does however involve a long ride by road or a short flight. Taking that effort is definitely worth it though as Jaffna has a lot in store for you.

Best places to visit in Jaffna

Nainativu Island

Located off the west coast of the Jaffna Peninsula and is accessible by boat. The Tamil’s visit the Nagapooshani Amman Temple on this island. A stone figure of a five headed cobra is the center of worship at this temple. The island is also home to the Nagadeepa Viharaya, a Buddhist temple that was initially built in the 3rd century. Although the temple in existence today is a recently built one, on either side of the temple, there are two very ancient objects that attract visitors.

Old Dutch Fort

The fort in Jaffna is smaller in size when compared to the Galle Fort and is built out of coral and limestone. Due to easy landing facilities for sea vessels, the Portuguese probably decided to locate the fort in Jaffna.

Archaeological Museum

This should be included in your Sri Lanka Jaffna itinerary as there are some rare and unique antiques pertaining to Hindu and Buddhist religions collected at this archaeological museum.

Nallur Temple

The Nallur Murugan Kovil is a significant Hindu temple in Jaffna. With a history dating back to centuries ago, the temple celebrates an annual festival in August every year. The main entrance of the Nallur Temple features a finely carved five storied tower in Dravidian style architecture, which is a popular highlight for tourists.

Clock Tower

One of the oldest landmarks in Jaffna is the clock tower that was built to celebrate the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1875.

Keerimalai Hot Water Springs

These natural water springs are one of the best places to visit in Jaffna. The water is not warm, but very soothing and the springs are very close to the sea, hence making the water as fresh as it can get.

Beaches

The best beach in Jaffna District is in Karainagar, about 20km from Jaffna town. It is also known as Casuarina beach because of the Casuaraina trees lines on the shore instead of coconut trees. The sand is soft and different compared to other coastal areas in the country. And of course, the beaches in Jaffna are absolutely safe for an enjoyable swim.
